DeTar Hospital North Celebrates Big Win for Moms and Babies: 0% C-Section Rate for Low-Risk Births in March 2025
4/14/2025
DeTar Hospital North’s Women & Children’s Center is proud to share a big success: Last month, not a single low-risk, first-time mom needed a C-section. That means more moms were able to have vaginal births, which often means faster recovery, fewer complications and healthier babies.
C-sections can be necessary in some cases, but for healthy, low-risk pregnancies, avoiding surgery is often better for both mom and baby. This progress supports national goals to lower unnecessary C-sections and promote safer, more natural birth experiences.
“This achievement shows the amazing work our team is doing,” said Mary Claire Bradshaw, R.N., director of the Women & Children’s Center. “We’ve focused on helping women understand their options, supporting natural labor and working closely with our doctors and nurses to make the best choices for each birth.”
Why This Matters to Families
Vaginal birth can offer:
- Faster healing after birth
- Lower risk of infection and complications
- Better bonding and breastfeeding for baby
- Shorter hospital stays and lower costs
What Made This Possible
- More education for expecting moms about labor and delivery
- Training staff to use natural movement and positions during labor
- Tools like wireless monitors and peanut balls that help with labor
- Encouraging moms to move around during labor
- Working closely with each mom to make decisions together
DeTar Hospital North’s C-section rate for low-risk births dropped from 35.1% in 2023 to 20.6% so far in 2024—and hitting 0% last month is proof that the changes are working.
“We want every family to feel safe and supported through their birth experience,” Bradshaw said. “We’re proud to offer this level of care right here in Victoria at DeTar Hospital North.”
