VICTORIA, TX– – DeTar Healthcare System recently celebrated a century of service to the Victoria community and surrounding counties with a 100 Years of Caring DeTar Picnic at Club Westerner on Sunday, November 17, 2024. The event brought together employees, their families, and DeTar’s extended healthcare family for an afternoon of fellowship, food, music, and fun.
The picnic featured a delicious BBQ spread, games for all ages, and an on-site DJ, offering a well-deserved opportunity for staff to relax and enjoy time with their loved ones in celebration of DeTar’s rich history and future.
“This picnic was more than just a celebration—it was a chance for us to come together as a community and reflect on the remarkable journey that has brought us to our 100th anniversary,” said Bernard Leger, CEO of DeTar Healthcare System. “We are so proud of the incredible team here at DeTar, whose dedication and hard work have made our hospital and healthcare services a trusted resource for generations. It’s an honor to celebrate 100 years of compassionate care, and we look forward to the many years to come.”
A Legacy of Caring and Innovation
Founded in 1924, DeTar Healthcare System has evolved from a small 10-bed facility to a modern medical center serving the South Texas Crossroads region. The hospital’s humble beginnings began when Dr. William T. DeTar and his son, Dr. Webb T. DeTar Sr., purchased a two-story residence and transformed it into a hospital, marking the start of a century-long commitment to healthcare excellence.
Through the years, DeTar has grown significantly, with notable milestones including the 1936 expansion into a new 30-bed facility named DeTar Memorial Hospital, the 1950s acquisition of Victoria Hospital, and continuous upgrades to technology and services. Today, DeTar is known for its advanced trauma services, robotic-assisted surgeries, and comprehensive cancer care.
Looking to the Future
As DeTar celebrates its centennial year, the healthcare system remains focused on continuing its mission to provide compassionate, high-quality care. With the opening of a Cancer Center and the ongoing expansion of services, DeTar is committed to meeting the evolving needs of the community, ensuring that generations to come will have access to the best possible healthcare, close to home.
"As we look back on the past 100 years, we are filled with pride for all we’ve accomplished, but we’re also excited for what the future holds,” said Leger. “The healthcare landscape has changed so much in the last century, and it’s inspiring to think about what advancements lie ahead. But one thing that will never change is our commitment to the people we serve. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring DeTar remains the place to go for trusted, quality care in the Crossroads region for many years to come.”
