DeTar Healthcare System Announces Plans to Honor Doctors' Day with Charitable Contributions and Community Partnerships

In celebration of Doctors' Day on March 30, DeTar Healthcare System is proud to announce a special initiative to recognize and honor the dedicated medical professionals who serve the Crossroads community. Rather than a traditional gift to its medical staff, DeTar made charitable contributions to two local causes, reflecting the healthcare system’s ongoing commitment to community well-being.
This year, DeTar contributed $1,000 to the Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, benefiting the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, and $5,000 to the VISD Education Foundation to go towards the purchase of an An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) which is a a quick test to check the heartbeat. It records the electrical signals in the heart.
Supporting Hunger Relief in the Crossroads
As part of its Doctors' Day tribute, DeTar supported the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent by donating $1,000, which will provide 500 jars of peanut butter for families in need. Peanut butter, a high-demand but often under donated item, is a key source of protein for those struggling with food insecurity across the 11-county region served by the food bank.
The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent is an essential resource that serves over 100 local agencies, including those in Victoria, Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, and surrounding counties. Through its efforts, the food bank provides food, nutrition education, and advocacy to support children, families, and seniors facing hunger.
“Doctors' Day is a chance to honor the incredible work of our healthcare professionals, and we are proud to recognize them with this contribution to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent,” said Bernard Leger, CEO of DeTar Healthcare System. “We know that healthcare is about more than just treating patients—it’s also about supporting the broader community, and we’re committed to that.”

Healthcare Career Development & Education – Partnering with VISD Education Foundation
In addition to supporting hunger relief, DeTar is excited to announce a new partnership with the Victoria Independent School District (VISD) Education Foundation. Through a $5,000 grant, DeTar will help fund a healthcare career development program designed to engage local high school students and inspire them to pursue careers in the medical field. And, this donation includes the purchase of an EKG machine for the students in the CMMA program. Aaron Glaeske, executive director of the VISD Education Foundation, said, “Currently the teachers in the CMMA program are using ‘old school’ read outs, as well as ‘point and tell’ techniques to train the students in how to use the ECG machine. This device will greatly improve their instruction, training, and the quality of the students that VISD produces. This training equipment will potentially influence hundreds of future students in VISD in just a few short years.”
On the grant development, it will focus on early healthcare career development, providing students with exposure to healthcare professions, hands-on learning opportunities, and mentorship to guide them through their academic and professional paths. The initiative aims to increase access to careers in healthcare and encourage students to consider how they can contribute to their community’s health.
“We believe that fostering interest in the healthcare field from a young age is essential for growing the future workforce,” said Leger. “By partnering with the VISD Education Foundation, we are excited to give students the opportunity to explore the many rewarding career paths in healthcare right here in Victoria.”
