DeTar Healthcare System previews DeTar Cancer Center
7/8/2022
Representatives from DeTar Healthcare System and the community celebrated the health system's new cancer center construction project with a preview of the radiation therapy vault on Thursday evening.
“The presence of COVID in our community in January hindered our plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony. The construction of the vault for the linear accelerator represents a major milestone for the project which we are pleased to celebrate today,” said Bernard Leger, chief executive officer for the DeTar Healthcare System. “This project will enhance cancer treatment options available in our community, expanding access to care, such as radiation treatment and nuclear imaging, for Crossroads residents.”
The 12,000-square-foot project envelops the first floor of the medical office building at 601 E San Antonio St. which was expanded to accommodate additional space for infusions, treatment rooms and advanced technology. In addition to the radiation therapy equipment, the new cancer treatment center will include a permanent, onsite PET/CT scanner, which performs advanced imaging to help oncologists diagnose and treat their patients.
“The cancer center represents a new frontier for the DeTar Healthcare System: the opportunity to provide coordinated oncology care including radiation oncology under a single roof,” shared radiation oncologist, Dr. Mediha Ahmad. “I am excited to be a part of this new venture, contributing to this vision and providing high-quality, comprehensive cancer care to the residents of Victoria and the surrounding communities.”
Dr. Ahmad joined the medical staff earlier this year and will help develop the new program. The cancer center will also be supported by hematologist/oncologist Dr. Jose Valladares and other cancer specialists.
“Broadening our oncology services to include new physicians and technology would not be possible without the support of our local medical community,” added Leger. “Our community and our hospital are very fortunate to have local physicians who are dedicated to ensuring quality health care remains available in our local market. Adding these services is in the best interest of our current residents and will help ensure our community’s future growth.”
Slated to open later this year, the project was designed by Environments for Health Architecture (E4H). Skiles Group serves as the general contractor.
